November 18, 2011: Optical Society of America (OSA) elected Sergey B. Mirov, Ph.D., University Professor, to the rank of Fellow.

October 26, 2011: Americal Physical Society (APS) hosted on Oct 25 a Webinar conversation with Mike Waloch, who is a doctoral student at UAB Physics and Arts et Metiers Paris Tech. The discusses addresses dual-doctoral programs in Europe.

October 17, 2011: UAB Reporter article entitled Small World: UAB Researchers Build the Nanoscale Future reports advances of Yogesh K. Vohra, Ph.D., Professor and University Scholar, College of Arts and Sciences, and the UAB's Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNMB) to synthesize and characterize nanoscale materials and structures and integrate them into practical biomedical devices and technologies.

October 16, 2011: Sergey B. Mirov, Ph.D., University Professor, College of Arts and Sciences, has been invited by the Optical Society of America to serve as Chair of the Optical Materials Studies Technnical Group for a three-year term beginning January 1, 2012.

August 27, 2011: YK Vohra awarded NIH grant for TMJ prosthesis The National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded a Phase II grant to Yogesh K. Vohra, Ph.D., Professor and University Scholar, College of Arts and Sciences, and Vista Engineering for their work on a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) prosthesis.

July 11, 2011: Hadiyah-Nicole Green has been awarded  1st place in the poster competition at the 3rd International Conference from Nanoparticles and Nanomaterials to Nanodevices and Nanosystems,  Crete Island, Greece.  Title of winning poster was “Active Targeting, Fluorescence Imaging, and NIR Photothermal Therapy of Malignant Tumors.”

The Department of Physics is located within the College of Arts and Sciences. It offers courses in astronomy, physical science, and physics for non-majors; several undergraduate program options, including honors physics program, biophysics track, and a physics education track for physics majors planning an interdisciplinary career; and graduate programs. The Graduate Program in Physics offers training in the basic and applied skills necessary for interdisciplinary research in academia, national laboratories, and industry. The Department of Physics has 21 full-time and 5 adjunct/emeritus faculty, and research expenditures of $3.1 million in astrophysics, biophysics, condensed matter, materials physics,  nanophysics, optics, lasers, spectroscopy, and physics education. Opportunities exist for interaction with major government laboratories including NASA AMES Research Center, Goddard Space Flight Center, and Marshall Space Flight Center; the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Lab; the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) at Brookhaven National Lab; the Lawrence Livermore National Lab; the Naval Research Lab; Oak Ridge National Lab; the Air Force Research Lab; the National Cancer Institute at NIH; National High Magnetic Field Lab, Tallahassee, Florida; and the Center for Integrated Nanotechnology, Los Alamos National Lab..
